In 2012, Shiva launched the Energy Solidarity Cooperative (ESC) in Oakland, California, and served as Founder and Board Chair for 3 years. ESC designed and implemented community-based solar energy within underserved communities. He has split his adult life in California and Washington, DC. Shiva continues to support the racial and economic justice community organizing and policy advocacy work of coalitions including the National Energy Democracy Project, the Southeast Climate & Energy Network, the Tennessee Valley Energy Democracy Movement and the Advancing Equity & Opportunity Democratizing Rural Electric Cooperatives working group (AEO, DREC). He is an avid lover of history and (heterodox) economics, and enjoys music, cooking, meditation, yoga, tea, poetry, futbol and all sorts of outdoor adventures.
