LIVING AND WORKING AT SEA (Queen Mary 2, Cunard Cruislines - Carnival Corporation & PLC) I would like to share my experience in working as a part of the crew on Queen Mary 2, Cunard cruise lines. I have been asked this question a lot of time, “What is it like to be working on a cruise ship? Is it worth it? My answer is that it is absolutely worth it. You will meet great people and make amazing friends from many different countries. You’ll learn to tolerate ridiculous work schedules and unbearable people, for the few hours you can spend on shore in fantastic destinations around the world all while saving a bit of cash. I worked as a Chief Printer on Queen Mary 2 cruise ship for eighteen months. I wanted this job so much so that I can travel around the world while working. I have seen every continent except Antarctica. Working with people from all over the world, with different customs and beliefs. I feel multicultural experience has a positive effect on me - international thing is the best part of the ship. You will learn so much about the world and it is not because you are travelling, but because your fellow crew mates are from a fundamentally different part of the world with a different point of view - so you are constantly learning about new culture. I got a separate cabin fro myself, only a few employees do, as they are usually put up on a sharing basis. My job is to assist with the daily print requirement on board such as newspapers, restaurant menu cards, shore excursions flyers, banners, scribbling parts and stationeries. I was incharge of the paper stocks, ink stocks, design hub and a two color Heidelberg minioffset printing machine. The pay is not bad. You get free accommodation, free food and free flight tickets back home. You work for seven days a week for eight months. The crew members has their own deck (deck 3), own bar, lounge areas, library, gym, and dining areas. The crew are divided by the rank they hold. There is almost a hierarchical system in place with Officers on top, then the staffs, followed by the general crew. Officers are the managers of various departments. Staffs are the entertainment team, casino workers, chefs, art auctioneers, photographers and printers. They contribute to the twenty percent of the total crew. Vast majority are the general crew - waiters, bartenders, cleaners and able seaman. The workers on the ship are insanely efficient. While working on a cruise, you need to think about yourself as a sailor. Everyday you are constantly travelling, with your routine schedule.Shiva
