I have a confession for you: I never set out with the ambition of becoming a social media manager. This probably isn't much of a surprise, given my academic background and qualifications. On first glance, you'd be forgiven for thinking that a career as an academic, working in Higher Education was the original goal. And maybe when I was younger this was where I saw my academic journey ending. But, as I progressed at University, completing the various qualifications, I soon realised that I was far more interested in the way that history is communicated to the public and, in turn, how these publics engaged with the history that was being communicated. So, I suppose, given my change in interests, becoming a social media manager who works in the cultural and heritage sector makes retrospective sense. At least that's what I tell myself.Whether it's writing witty tweets or facebook posts, taking eye-catching photographs or creating attention-grabbing short from video, the challenge is the same. How do we make historical content interesting and engaging? I'm a firm believer in creating content that people want to engage with, not creating content that meets organisational needs. It's all very well going through the motions of digital storytelling, but let's at least ensure we create content that has interest and value for our intended audiences. At times this mantra means you've got to take risks, pushing the boundaries from time to times. But, for all of the reasons outlined above, that's why I wouldn't want to do a different job. I get to think historically. Exercise different forms of creativity. Devise ways of ensuring the content is seen by the people we want to see it.
