The mission of the Center on Patient Engagement and Learning (CPEL) is to utilize its resources and expertise to collaborate with patients and health organizations, connect patients to other patients for the purpose of facilitating exchanges of experiential knowledge and expertise, establish pilot projects within communities focusing on the practice of managing specific chronic illnesses, conduct research in the areas of patient learning, engagement, and patient-centered practices, and collaborate with health professionals in clinical settings.

Taught core courses in the department of Computer Science covering concepts in hardware, programming, and applications. Directed and mentored students on technology and research projects. Developed innovative approaches based on established learning theories to engage savvy technology students in the science behind every day digital tools, devices and applications.

Developed and integrated medical display software and medical record systems to connect patients medical imaging data with their text-based clinical and laboratory data. Assisted with the due-diligence and acquisition of related business.

Conducted research in the area of medical image processing and Computer Aided Diagnostic System for breast imaging. Developed algorithms for diagnosis of abnormalities in X-ray images, including a novel method leading to a patent, for unsupervised detection of the skin line boundary in digitized X-ray images. Participated in the creation of an integrated database of digital X-rays and patient data from various clinical sites with over 4000 films leading to the most extensive database in the US for mammograms at the time.
