Role Database Administrator My DBA Activities included - • Performed the upgrade of Sybase 11.5.3 server to Sybase 12.0.0.3 server. • Supported development team in converting production database objects such as tables, indexes, users, permissions, stored procedures, triggers, etc. in Sybase by writing shell scripts using clearcase tool. Tested those on system test servers and implemented the converted objects in production databases. • Performed production and system databases recovery in Sybase whenever it required. Written a shell script that accept a good cycle no. and generates the list of database and transaction log dumps that require for recovery. • Performed index reorgs whenever it required. Written a shell script that will drop and recreate the indexes for application databases. • Supported transferring database dumps from production servers to testing, development servers and loading the same on testing/development servers for assembly & component testing users. • Written shell scripts that checked daily logs on all production servers and executed through cron. • Documented the procedures to follow in case of Disaster Recovery. • Rebuild the CMTS development server after it crashed. • Updated data model design diagrams for all billing application databases using Powerdesigner 6.0 tool • Provided On-Call production support for various sites & applications databases of total data volume 10 Terabytes. This includes 20 ASE Servers, 5 MSSQL Servers and 10 Oracle Servers. • Supported the evaluation of Princeton Softech's Relational Tools for Servers. The tool is especially used for moving data and database objects such as tables, indexes, stored procedures, triggers, defaults, rules from production to test servers.

My DBA Activities included • Installed and configured Sybase, SQL Servers. • Planned and created databases as per the application requirements. • Performed upgrades of Sybase 10.1 to 11.5.3 version. • Created the users, roles and granted or revoked the permissions. • Designed, developed & implemented database objects such as tables, indexes, defaults, rules, stored procedures, triggers, and cursors. • Planned backup methodology. • I had maintained 50 databases with total size of 100GB. • Monitored regular backups. Also did the testing of the restoring of the backups. • Checked the error logs frequently for any errors detected during the shifts. • Monitored Database consistency checking (DBCC). This was the regular task done before backup. • Diagnosed & removed the corruption from the databases. • In query optimization, steps involved were - making sure the statistics is up-to-date, checking search arguments or joins, ensuring proper use of indexes. • In many stored procedures of the applications, permanent tables were used for temporary storage. That was also leading the inter locking of the users. I replaced those permanent tables with temporary tables. Whenever procedure gets executed it creates separate temporary tables for each instance. It reduced the inter locking of the user connections. • Partitioning of the tables - Several tables were used very frequently. Many users were trying to insert the records in the same tables. This was leading to page contention and locking of the user connections. To reduce locking and page contention, I added partition in those tables. This improved the performance of the system. • To improve the performance of the system, I use to drop and recreate the clustered indexes of the tables. It reduced the fragmentation of the tables. • I modified about 200 reports, which were taking time to execute. After optimization of the reports, stored procedures, performance improved drastically.
