I joined a medium sized team working on the algorithm used to infer trips from Gmail and Inbox. I started as a remote individual contributor and grew to remotely manage the team (with high manager satisfaction survey scores). During my tenure, the team deployed several large precision and recall improvements, replaced a system running in multiple products with a novel CRDT-based API of our own design, started a project that gave the team the ability to productively use orders of magnitude more training data, and started a second project to build a TensorFlow-based recommender system (with very promising results).

As Director of NYC Engineering and our first technical hire, I designed our coding challenge and technical interview process. I also designed the company’s job ladder, manager training program, and performance review process. This grew and supported a 150+ person company with a highly successful 25+ person engineering organization.As the Director of Growth, I aligned the team behind the company’s primary technologies. We supported user needs from an organization “going national” while also replacing two admission systems in situ.As Director of Infrastructure I lead a team that supported cross-cutting needs for our entire technical organization.I designed and lead development of our search infrastructure (Go, ElasticSearch). This supported our growth via distributed indexing, while also serving 1000x faster than its predecessor.I designed and lead development of our product metrics and analytics. These metrics were critical to product decisions within the company.I designed and developed our release process and infrastructure. This reliably supported 45+ pushes per week.I also lead the performance team, the backend teams, and acted as our Digital Security Czar.I interviewed 100+ engineers at all job levels.I co-authored two provisional patents.

I managed a medium team. We designed and delivered the first ever experiment system for cross-product personalization at Google, used to adjust the experience of billions of people across dozens of Google products in real time. For that, I won a special award granted by the “L-team.”I worked on the secret sauce in search ranking ... that’s all I can say.I fulfilled our reporting obligations with Twitter on Google’s Realtime Search product. For this work I won an “OC Award.”I lead a team that created a document classification framework that performed multi-class classification on billions of pages on the internet.I was a founding member of the Experiment Council, and reviewed the experiment design of hundreds of user-facing A/B tests in my tenure there. I did a mix of experiment analysis, logs analysis, and metrics design for many products. For this work I won another “OC Award.”I lead a team that analyzed and suggested improvements in the excerpting and summarization algorithms used by search.I lead a team that suggested improvements to the composition of the search index.I interviewed 200+ engineers at all job levels.

I wrote "Pattern Seeker", a distributed data mining suite used to support the commodities group, estimated to save the company $XXM per year on futures contracts.I also built parts of a recommender system used to support retail shelf space optimization in partnership with a national brand.
