Senior Water Resources Engineer
City of Columbus: Columbus Sewer System Capacity Model (SSCM) 2012 / Columbus, OH. As a task leader and senior modeler currently assisting the City of Columbus in building high resolution SWMM models. These models are being developed based on a cutting edge approach developed by Dr. Hazem Gheith that includes a physically based RDII calculation using SWMM groundwater module that gives better understanding of the RDII sources and their contribution. Primary sources of inflow and infiltration can be any combination of the following: Direct downspout connection, foundation and floor drains, lateral service connections, manholes, sewer mains, and other sources. This innovative approach employed to generate RDII using the groundwater module of SWMM by splitting the service area into sub-catchment features that correspond to the various RDII sources. Each RDII source is set to contribute to a subsurface aquifer. These aquifers represented the different manmade trenches within the service area. The hydrologic cycle, which included the surface runoff, evapotranspiration, surface infiltration, deep percolation and RDII processes, was appropriately configured for each RDII source using SWMM’s runoff, aquifer and groundwater modules. This complex and lengthy process of building high resolution models at house level has been simplified by building a Model Builder script within ArcGIS environment that integrates and process more than 12 ArcGIS datasets (residential roofs, commercial roofs, perimeters, sewer lengths in right of way, private properties, number of manholes in pervious area and impervious area, area of garages, length of stormwater pipes per each area etc.) to produce detailed description of the contributing RDII sources and their physical parameters. Constructed SWMM model facilitated a detailed evaluation of the potential impact of the proposed RDII remediation to reduce SSO activations to meet different level of services.

Storm Flood Relief: Project involved modeling a portion of the Philadelphia City to study the flooding problems in highly urbanized neighborhoods. This project aimed at finding solutions to basement flooding during wet weather events. A detailed SWMM5 model was developed at block level which was used to evaluate alternatives such as disconnecting the roof leaders, street storage & storage tanks to eliminate the flooding. Modeling Support for the Capital Projects: This project involved building a planning level model of a tunnel to eliminate the overflows to rivers from the City. The challenging aspect of the project was to model the possibility of draining the tunnel in to an existing WWTP through gravity.Development of Existing H&H Models of a Combined Sewer System: Using SWMM RUNOFF, EXTRAN, & ArcView GIS, developed a complex collection system model for the Philadelphia City. The models developed have thousands of junctions, pipes & hundreds of CSO regulators. The project included development of an innovative SAS-based software to QAQC the models for hydraulic correctness. This model is currently used for reporting of CSOs at NPDES permitted outfalls & for planning & designing of long-term CSO control facilities.Development of Integrated Watershed Plan: Assisted the PWD in development of an integrated watershed management plan to achieve full regulatory compliance under the National CSO Policy, NPDES & PADEP stormwater regulations, & the TMDL program. The project included collection of a large amount of information on structural & nonstructural stormwater BMPs & their applicability to the watershed, including innovative options such as rain barrels, green rooftops, & porous pavement. The effectiveness of these options relative to watershed goals were evaluated extensively using a calibrated SWMM model. I also worked on enhancing existing SAS-based software to assist in calibration of H&H models using quantitative & statistical methods.
