I'm an award-winning journalist with a decade of experience across national, local and student media. I am currently a news editor at the Independent, and was previously the deputy news editor at the Metro and a content editor at two local news websites at Reach - MyLondon and Kent Live.I am a mental health first aider and have a particular interest in crime, education, health and queer topics. I was named an 'LGBTQ+ trailblazer' by Attitude Magazine on its 101 list in 2024.I also won the Kent Young Journalist of the Year award in 2018 and was named one of 30 journalists to watch from across the UK under the age of 30.Passionate about helping young people get into journalism, I provided industry advice for sixth formers and university students at independent publications The Llama and Kettle Magazine, and edited the Career Camel blog. I have been a mentor in several capacities including for the John Schofield Trust, and was previously a trustee for the Student Publication Association – a registered charity which offers support for UK student journalists. I have also joined the judging panel for the Kent Press and Broadcast Awards to continue to support and celebrate local media.Since the start of my career I have made a number of TV and radio appearances as a social media commentator and media analyst. I also speak at conferences, on podcasts, in online seminars and sit on panels – and even took part in the Red Bull Soapbox Race. Events I have spoken at include Brighton SEO, outREACH, Newsrewired, Behind Local News and the Student Publication Association’s national, regional and virtual events. I have reviewed the daily newspaper front pages on the BBC News Channel and Times Radio, and I also give pitching advice to people working in PR.I knew I wanted to be a journalist from the age of 17, when I had an article published on page 3 of my local newspaper. I gained an excellent degree in English Literature at the University of Warwick, and during my time there I threw myself into student media - becoming deputy editor of my student newspaper The Boar as well as taking on a number of other roles. I won an award in 2015 for my outstanding contribution to the Students' Union.I then completed my NCTJ Diploma with the Press Association in London and received the gold standard (with shorthand), and later passed my NQJ qualification to become a senior reporter.I have also had bylines in a number of other national publications, including the Guardian, the Mirror, the Times, the Telegraph, HuffPost UK and the Daily Star.
