I completed my Civil Engineering degree at UNSW in 1970 and followed this with a PhD in Structural Engineering over the following four years. My path through engineering was supported by a DMR cadetship, giving excellent experience across all university long vacations. My graduate work started looking after culverts on the South Western Freeway (now M5) towards Campbelltown, but moved to bridge construction at Darling Harbour where I worked on the North Western Freeway, that concrete henge over the now entertainment area which was, at the time, a bustling railway goods yard. From there I moved to Head Office for some years designing bridges up to the 300m Georges River crossing on the M5 at Liverpool.In 1980 I moved to the consulting firm now known as Worley, and spent many years on design and strengthening of offshore platforms as well as designing sewer outfalls and the like. That work evolved over time, moving through other intrastructure areas of rail and power, but always with a few bridges as well.Over the last two decades I have progressively diversified my interests to heritage (principally of bridges) with Worley/Advisian and Sue Rosen Associates, climate change where I am involved as Chairman of the Ocean Nourishment Foundation, sustainable agriculture through Converte, and a range of charities in the environmental and human rights areas.Life keeps getting busier!
