About Sam Campbell
I am a PhD candidate at the University of Queensland, with broad interests in the evolution of scorpion venom and morphology, particularly in defensive contexts of usage. I want to explore how venom components target different pathways (including pain), how morphology may have evolved to support defensive behaviour and how antivenoms can effectively inhibit severe venom effects in humans. Having completed a placement aligned to the biotech industry, I am also interested in opportunities to extend beyond my PhD research and delve into the world of commercialisation and biotech. Coming from a background studying animal venoms, where several successful drugs have sprung from the most unlikely of sources, it is clear that natural resources hold great promise that is being under-utilised.

I conducted a 3 month industry placement, during the second year of my PhD, at LSQ. Working with the incredible team, I helped organise a research showcase, a discussion workshop on the barriers in Australian mRNA manufacturing and assisted in the production of corporate messaging and external engagement. I had the opportunity to attend various industry events and experience networking in a way not possible within the confines of my PhD.

As President of the UQ Biology Postgraduate Club (UQBPC), I oversaw the organisation and management of key social activities throughout the year including a long running student conference that helped foster a thriving social community essential for postgraduate study. It was my role to secure funds from external sources, ensure financial regulations were met and assist all others in the committee to fulfill their roles. At the end of my tenure I helped ensure a smooth transition to the newly formed School of Environment Postgraduate associaiton (SEPA), to accomodate the merger of two schools that doubled our postgraduate student membership.

Biomedical Vacation Scholarship
I conducted a 2-month vacation research projected supported by a grant awarded by the Wellcome trust. The project assayed a range of snake venoms, attempting to identify novel receptor-ligand interactions against a line of human astrocytoma cells. Utilising key pharmacological techniques, I investigated the potential role of multiple venoms' activity against an emerging family of purinergic receptors.
