Molecular function and phenotype of new genes. Evolutionary genetics and genomics.I am interested in the evolution of the complex biological systems. In my thesis research, I investigated the evolution of phenotype and the underlying the gene-gene interaction network using genetic, biochemical and functional genomics approaches. I studied new gene origination, which provides ultimate genetic sources to trigger evolution of these complex processes. I found that functional new genes frequently arise during evolution, playing essential roles in developmental programs, reproduction and neural circuits. An on-going project is to characterize the role of new genes in phenotypic evolution in multiple closely related species.
