In my graduate work, I have leveraged biochemical and proteomic techniques to dissect non-energetic functions of ketone bodies and other small molecule metabolites relevant to aging and neurodegeneration. I have independently led two projects defining the novel role of the ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) as a regulator of protein solubility in the brain and gut. I also collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams on five projects relating to neuroinflammation, delirium, tauopathies, preclinical method development, and clinical trial design. These projects have currently led to 2 first-author and 1 co-author scientific publications. I have successfully written fellowships and grants including T32 and Marine Biological Laboratory fellowship funding, travel grants, and a NSF GRFP honorable mention, totaling over $100,000 over my graduate training. I am committed to disseminating scientific research, with 9 oral and 6 poster scientific presentations, and over 20 lay audience presentations. Additionally, I have mentored 2 laboratory technicians, 5 undergraduate students, and 1 high-school student.

In my undergraduate work, I trained with Dr. Bin Xu (2018-2020) in the Dept. of Biochemistry and with Dr. Matthew Buczynski and Dr. Ann Gregus (2017-2018) in the School of Neuroscience. In the Xu lab, I utilized FPLC-based recombinant protein purification to examine structurally-related modifiers of human tau protein aggregation. In the Buczynski lab, I used rodent behavioral paradigms to interrogate nicotine addiction biology and cell-based assays to elucidate binding targets of orphaned G protein-coupled receptors. During this time, I successfully wrote grant and fellowship funding which supported my independent research over 3 summers. This work resulted in 1 co-author publication and 9 poster presentations.
