There is no greater strength than the power of will. I was studying computers when a friend asked me: Why do you not become a lawyer? Why, was my response. His answer ‘because you will be a damn good one’. With more than 18 years post legal qualification, I can confirm that he was right.My earliest memory is me, age 4, lying under a broken gramophone, trying to fix it. The drive to fix, organise and solve has never left me. Now, through Legal Spectrum, I put legal, development and organisational skills to use by solving the business, contracts and technical challenges of clients.I had been fortunate to work on government contract processes, complex transactions and bus rapid transit systems. I revel in it. The complexities have re-enforced the importance of being organised, which is my key strength.Except for comedy, I do not daddle much with fiction. I’m a deep and critical thinker, with loads of self-designed life philosophies and theories. I possess an insatiable desire to learn. My interest stretches far and wide: from genetics to astrology; from geology to chemistry; from medicine to everything else.I am a knowledge dynamite. There is much more to me than what meets the cursory eye.All challenges have solutions. All we are required to do is to find it. At the City of Cape Town, I honed my strong management skills. I started off with an under-resourced and understaffed branch with responsibilities that were critical to achieve the strategic public transport objective of the organization. When I left, the branch was restructured and resourced with competent staff.The duty to meet competing critical deadlines for bus rapid transit took my planning skills to the next level. My team and I achieved all the strategic business objectives of MyCiTi, services set for our branch. I enjoyed designing and implementing business improvement systems for bus rapid transit and Dial-A-Ride (specialised transport for persons with disabilities). Landing a project in spec, on time and within budget was a critical delivery. Though challenging at the beginning, I reveled in it. We ran several municipal regulatory framework and legislative processes. These included section 116 of the Municipal Finance Management Act (“MFMA”) processes, s33 MFMA processes, and oversee municipal asset transfer regulation processes.At the time I joined the City of Cape Town, contracts management was in its infancy. I’m proud that when I left, it was one of the key strategic objectives of the organization. With resource constraints, we had to manage complex operational and public transport objectives. By altering our service delivery model, we were able to achieve more with less. Developing and implementing standing operating procedures were critical enablers.We designed service level agreements and master template contracts. Our responsibilities included the development and implementation of high value strategic public transport contracts and stakeholder management plans.
