About Sidney Taylor
Hi there! It's Sidney here. I graduated from Harvey Mudd College in May 2023 with a degree in general engineering with interests in robotics, autonomous vehicles, mechatronics, and computer vision. I just returned to the US after my Watson Fellowship project (Aug 2023 - Aug 2024) during which I investigated how art creates community and how communities create art through the lens of public art fabrication, music, and dance. During my Watson year, I learned alongside mentors in Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Singapore, and Belgium as I sought to explore the question of “What types of creative environments empower communities?”. I explored art fabrication through a variety of mediums including metal, wood, recycled fabrics, and paint. I pursued metal working at sculpture studios, experimented with wood steam bending, volunteered at local tool libraries, helped paint a public mural, and participated in street furniture creation. I brought inquisitiveness, authenticity, and a creative spirit as I independently pursued this self directed project.I'm currently open to work as I look to jump into an engineering role in the robotics industry. My professional interests lie at the intersection of mechatronics, computer vision, and leveraging technology to create positive impact.

Sidney Taylor work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Associate Software Engineer
Thomas J. Watson Fellow
Exploring international makerspaces and sculpture workshops to bring innovative designs to life, to help build a brighter and more connected future, and to discover how art builds communities and how communities build art. I led my Watson journey to Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Singapore, and Belgium.
Computer Vision Senior Capstone Project Engineer (Fall Semester Team Lead)
The Project Metal Inspection capstone project team is implementing a computer vision system to detect surface defects on aluminum sheets. The team is designing an image collection system, developing a robust image data set to test and train a machine learning algorithm, and implementing a real-time defect detection system to help the metal production company maintain high standards of product quality.During the Fall semester, I helped design the camera rig and select a camera lens with appropriate field of view. I also wrote a Python program to capture frames from the GigE camera on the manufacturing production floor. This system stores relevant camera metadata in a SQL database. During the Spring semester, I worked on implementing image pre-processing using OpenCV edge, corner, and keypoint detection.
Machine Shop Proctor
Instructed workshop users on safe and proper use of metal and wood working machines (lathes, mills, band saws, shears, jointer, planer, spot welder, sandblaster, sanders, chop saw, laser cutter) enabling students to bring project ideas to life
Engineering Systems Practicum Proctor
Advised Engineering Systems students on proper use of oscilloscopes, soldering, hand tools, and LabView as they built an underwater robot.
Riggs Fellow In Manufacturing Engineering And Management
Worked on two manufacturing engineering projects alongside Professor Gokli and 3 fellow students:Project #1: Optimized a carton packaging line using insight from root cause investigation, takt time calculations, and value stream mapping; Introduced single-piece flow and lean manufacturing principles to the line with new operating procedures, automation equipment, adaptable workstations, and designated production roles; The new line achieved a 28% improvement in carton production and saves $1.2 million annuallyProject #2: Using AutoCAD, designed a facility floor plan optimized for material flow for a clay manufacturerCo-authored an in-depth final technical report for each project, Project #1 paper accepted to 2022 IISE National Conference
Grader/Tutor For Introduction To Computer Science
Kids Ski Instructor
Working part time instructing kids ages 3-12 on skiing fundamentals in private and group lessons during the 2020-2021, 2021-2022, and 2022-2023 winter seasons.
Hardware Reliability Test Intern
Mechanical Team Lead (2021), Mechanical Team Member (2020)
Fall 2021: Designed a watertight enclosure for the ZED2 camera; Leading the fabrication team in new part manufacturingFall 2020 & Spring 2021: Collaborated on the design of a two hinged mechanical gripper powered by servo motors to pick up game element piecesSpring 2020: Designed an interlocking rack for electrical components in SolidWorks
Doosan Bobcat Clinic Team Member
Collaborated on code base development to direct the Doosan Bobcat ZT6000 lawn mower through autonomous navigation for optimized striped area coverage. Utilizing localization, mapping, path planning, tracking, and low-level system control. Interfacing with radar, GPS, and IMU to collect data about the environment for navigation and obstacle avoidance. Implemented a structure in C++ that defines the mowing area and can be visualized with Matplotlib.
Teamtime App Developer
Harvey Mudd College CS Department Summer Start-Up Program. Learned React Native and Expo to develop TeamTime, a group alarm app, alongside two fellow students.
Nevada Delegate At The 2019 National Youth Science Camp
First Robotics Competition Team 5480 Project Manager
As the Project Manager of Reno's community high school robotics team during my senior year of high school, I coordinated with the leaders of the Mechanical Team, Electrical Team, and Programming Team to lead our group of 16 students through the robot design, build, and test processes.During the off-seasons, I fundraised over $3,000 in order to keep our robotics team free to join for all members. I also helped organize and coordinate community outreach events (such as FYRE's booth at the Reno Mini Maker Faire) and new member recruitment events (such as live robot demos at local middle and high schools). During all four years of high school, I represented our team as the human player on the competition drive team.
First Robotics Competition Team 5480 Mechanical Team Lead
As a Mechanical Team leader for the 2017 season, I led the effort to build and mount a winch to our ~100lb robot which lifted it up a rope earning us 50 points during matches at the competition. As a Mechanical Team leader for the 2018 season, I led the design and build of our three-wheeled robot chassis. Communication with the other mechanical groups as well as with the electrical and programming groups was crucial.
First Robotics Competition Team 5480 Mechanical Team Member
Peer Advising Liaison
As a Peer Advising Liaison, I worked alongside a team of 5 to 11 other PALs to advise fellow Davidson Academy peers on academic skills through one-on-one meetings and school-wide presentations. During my sophomore year, I co-authored a survival guide booklet for incoming freshman students.During my junior year, I was the Lead Peer Advising Liaison. In this position, I oversaw the PALs Program in conjunction with Davidson Academy teachers and staff. During the spring leading up to my junior year, I organized and lead an application review committee through the evaluation of written applications and interviews.
Stembops Intern
I used SolidWorks (CAD software), the laser cutter, the 3D printer, an Arduino, and a variety of electrical components to design and build a remote-controlled indoor blimp. I gained experience with C++ and code version control softwares GitHub and Bitbucket.
Volunteer Maker With The Space Whale Project
As a volunteer with the Space Whale project, I learned how to MIG weld, cut and position stained glass, and use the plasma cutter. I worked alongside a large team who shared their love for making with me and has inspired me to continue thinking about ways in which I can bring powerful ideas and emotion to life through materials and the arts. The Space Whale is a 40-foot-tall steel and stained glass sculpture of a mother humpback whale and her calf. The sculpture went to Burning Man in 2016. During the summer of 2017, I helped weld gussets to the back of the humpback calf and assemble more stained glass panels in preparation for the sculpture's installation in downtown Reno at City Plaza.
