You’re on LinkedIn, so you know how our world is saturated with transitions. At any given time, millions are swirling in a vortex of position changes, pivots in life direction, and paradigm shifts. All of us and our organizations go through frequent transitions. They can be frightening yet full of opportunity. While some of them are smooth, many wrack us with anxiety. I’ve seen it in many forms and places, from for-profit and nonprofit organizations in the US and worldwide to countless individuals wondering about their next steps. So many have a sense of lostness. Often, what they’ve lost is leadership.My specialty is the navigation of transition. I’ve paddled the whitewaters of transition as both an executive and a consultant with leaders and their governing boards. I have founded and led organizations and have thousands of hours of public speaking experience, from classes to keynotes to board facilitation.The word “consultant” has negative overtones, as many see a consultant as an outsider who comes in and sprays a staff with droplets of “wisdom” without bothering to learn the organization’s story and culture. It’s essential to listen and observe to understand the generational, cultural, and organizational dynamics. As a navigator, I want to know: Where exactly are you, where are you trying to go, and how can we move down the stream without crashing on the rocks?My story was taken to a different level by the Black Forest wildfire of 2013. At the time, it was the most destructive in Colorado history. It quickly obliterated my home and office. In the aftermath, my wife and I pondered the question of, “What now?” and chose to live lightly and make as much of an impact as we could with the time remaining. The experience reminded me to know where my significance comes from. I wrote “Nomad’s Fire: Life at the Intersection of Loss and Significance” out of the ashes to remind people to focus on what matters.I attended Florida State University and Dallas Theological Seminary, winning the honor graduate award for my doctoral work on nonprofit best practices. For twenty years, I was a leader in the “released time” education movement around the US. I also served for two decades as a Senior Instructor/trainer with Walk Thru the Bible Ministries. Recently, I led organizations through the turbulent Covid years, successfully navigating the swirling waters . . . while bouncing off as few rocks as possible.
