My practicum involves working on the CTSI-funded study COVID-19 vaccine Attitudes and Message Preferences (CAMP). The goal of this study is to understand healthcare providers' experiences with COVID vaccines for themselves, their communities, and their patients, which in turn will allow us to determine best practices for improving vaccination rate. My work involves transcribing interviews completed over zoom and helping with the coding process. Qualitative coding involves deriving general themes (ideas) from the words of individual participants. We used both deductive (applying ideas from existing conceptual models) and inductive (developing ideas from the participants' words) coding. Another task included conducting literature reviews on current research articles in order to highlight key points and takeaways for our CAMP manuscripts, which we are now starting to write. We plan on discussing barriers, facilitators, motivation, and strategies for COVID-19 in one paper, and the mental health impact and burnout of healthcare workers in the second paper. The next step in the study is surveying 200 healthcare workers about their willingness to accept vaccination, message preferences, and facilitators and barriers to vaccination. The survey data will be analyzed using multivariable logistic regression and the findings will be used to develop and test additional interventions to promote COVID-19 vaccine uptake.

Worked in a biochemistry and molecular biology lab working with an epigenetic modification known as histone H3 lysine 4 methylation (H3K4), which is important in gene transcription. I completed multiple experiments trying to see the effects of certain compounds on the methylation state of the Mixed Lineage Leukemia (MLL1) protein. MLL1 alone can only monomethylate, but when combined with WDR5, RBBP5, ASH2L, and DPY30 (WRAD), the core complex MWRAD is formed, resulting in an increase in the rate of monomethylation and the appearance of dimethylation activity. One subunit of MWRAD, ASH2L, has a plant homeo-domain (PHD) finger that have been suggested to interact with phosphoinositides, in particular, phosphatidylinositol 4,5 bisphosphate (PIP2). I am the first person in the world to see what effect PIP2 has on the rate of methylation with the complex.
