In addition, the Graduate Assistant is responsible for helping to coordinate and implement the annual Changemaker Challenge which invites students, faculty and staff to employ imagination, grit and passion to generate ideas to address a current social challenge proposed by leaders from the San Diego/Tijuana region. The SCDC collaborates, problem-solves, consults and innovates cross-divisionally to train staff and faculty in student-centered mindsets, methods and practices to improve the success, retention and belonging of Boise State students (especially those in their first-year, and more specifically, first-year commuter students as a segment of the total student population). In addition, the SCDC employs user experience (UX) and human-centered design (HCD) principles to innovate new institutional solutions and to create new ways of embedding student-centered design into University culture. To do so, the SCDC is responsible for synthesizing and translating qualitative data into meaningful narratives for distribution and support in building the infrastructure to sustain, iterate and create new ways of designing with the Higher Education context, including the implementation of a team of campus experience (CX) designers. The program aspires to help students: (1) identify their purpose, (2) understand and connect the threads between present collegiate experiences and contributions, and (3) translate this understanding into a relevant and compelling narrative for their future beyond a degree. The Beyond the Major Catalysts is a team of four, undergraduate interdisciplinary students tasked with helping their peers to achieve the outcomes of the Beyond the Major program. They do this through adopting the mindset of reflection as a self-catalyzing practice. In their inaugural year together, the Catalysts established a mission statement ("to inspire lifelong curiosity and catalyze student agency through reflection), and identified agency, self-advocacy, and curiosity as three guiding values of their team. Using these values, the Beyond the Major Catalysts spent their time empathizing with campus stakeholders (including students, faculty and staff) in order to identify the needs most prevalent to a student's ability to make sense of the experiences they have beyond their disciplinary major at Boise State. As a result of their work, the Catalysts discovered that if students are going to be asked to identify their purpose, seize unscripted opportunities for engagement and involvement, and tell a compelling narrative about their Boise State experience, then all students will need to make reflection a consistent, evolving practice both in-and-beyond their classroom experience. Consequently, in the second semester of their work together, the Catalysts dedicated their time to the creation of personalized reflective practices [and guide] that can be adopted and adapted by students to reflect upon their experience(s) in hopes of inspiring them to make meaningful contributions to the communities to which they belong.
