The goal of the project is to optimize a grating technique to extract gas from ice samples. Basal ice is found at the base of an ice sheet and has different physical properties then the upper ice bulk. This ice typically has a low gas content and thus it is necessary to find a way to extract as much gas as possible in order to make gas analysis possible.

Varved cores taken from Kenai Lake (taken in the summer of 2012 and 2015) situated on the Kenai Peninsula were digitalized by researchers of the RCMG (Renard Center of Marine Geology). Using the CT-images every core was examined on the presence of IRD and organic material. The goal of the research was to investigate if the proposed hypothesis could be accepted or be declined using grain analyses, climate data of the area and satellite images.
