I am a recent graduate from Dr. Michael Bulger's Lab at the University of Rochester Medical Center. My research focused on a novel class of transcriptional enhancer that are found at genes with high levels of expression and tissue specificity associated and with large domains of histone hyperacetylation, termed hyperacetylated chromatin domains (HCD). I characterized this class of enhancer using both bioinformatic and molecular biology techniques. Additionally I was able to show that these enhancers are both necessary and sufficient to modulate long-range chromatin structure, making them a distinct functional class of enhancer. Not only did I show that these enhancers have unique mechanism of action, but also that they are better able to identify cell identity genes than super enhancers.
