Jonathan is a bilingual human rights advocate in Washington, DC who is passionate about creating social change through empowering governments, private sectors and vulnerable communities to work together for real social change. Jonathan used to work as an attorney on the 2016 Colombian Peace Agreement, helping vulnerable communities and war victims have a voice in the judicial system, guaranteeing them inclusion and respecting their rights. Jonathan had the opportunity to work with Indigenous groups in Panamá, advocating for their rights in their efforts to mitigate conflicts and environmental degradation from large scale industrial activities, including toxic waste pollution, deforestation and forced migration. Jonathan recently worked as a Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs Officer for Colorado Food Cluster in Denver, Colorado, a non-profit organization addressing one of the most difficult issues for a lot of Americans, food insecurity. The goal of the program was to protect children and families who didn’t have access to the basic human right of adequate food during the COVID-19 emergency. Jonathan led the organization’s efforts to connect families, schools, local news, local government offices and various organizations to guarantee that everyone has access to quality food without regard to race, color, sex, language, age, religion, political, national or social origin, which is established by the United Nations’ Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Jonathan was selected to assist American University Professor Claudio Grossman at the 2022 International Law Commission at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. Here, he assisted in drafting new arguments to address some of the most pressing world issues, including climate change and sea level rise.Jonathan completed a Master of Laws Degree (LLM) in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at American University. He also received a Civil Servant Award for his active support for vulnerable communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. He additionally worked as an intern at the Inter-American Institute on Justice and Sustainability, where his role was to assist governments, local communities, and private stakeholders address the various challenges relating to environmental protection, climate change mitigation, community health, economic and social vitality, and strengthen the rule of law and good governance.
