Under the direction of George Meng, Ms. Mitchell is gaining invaluable experience in helping families who are currently in or near litigation regarding the administration of wills and trusts that have gone awry. Ms. Mitchell also has training in mediation, believes that clients are better satisfied with the outcome of their case when they provide input toward the resolution. Understanding that not all disputes can be resolved without court intervention, Ms. Mitchell will tirelessly advocate for her clients when their day in court arrives.

Research and draft memoranda and proposed orders for various dispositive motions in civil and domestic cases. Prepare Judge with legal research and drafted opinions on upcoming oral arguments in “on the record” appeals, judicial review and administrative mandamus actions. Review, organize and prepare the daily docket including retrieving files, drafting a review of each case, contacting attorneys and compiling jury instructions. Research and draft lengthy opinions in post-conviction cases. Observe court and assist Judge in ruling on cases taken under advisement.

Represented clients in domestic violence, name change, child custody, child support and contempt proceedings. Filed complaints, motions and propounded/produced discovery. Attended court hearings and settlement conferences. Researched, prepared, and implemented a curriculum to educate inner city youth about teen dating violence, peace and protective orders.

Investigated and researched statutory and case law to prepare inner-office memos to support claims and defenses in MD, DC and VA insurance defense cases. Drafted various motions with legal memoranda for both Federal and State litigation cases. Researched ABA and MSBA ethics opinions and drafted opinion letters for clients seeking advice regarding compliance with Rules of Professional Conduct. Conducted fact investigation on new cases to assess preliminary motions, possible defenses or third party and counter complaints where applicable. Reviewed and summarized discovery.

Investigate, organize and produce/propound discovery materials for civil litigation cases. Prepare and edit contracts and leases, wills, complaints, motions, and financial and property statements in family law cases. Manage filing of petitions with U.S. Bankruptcy Court and estates with the Register of Wills. Attend mediation and judicial proceedings to provide assistance. Majority of work is done independently from attorneys with frequent client interaction.

Conducted research for various judicial opinions. Performed a thorough review of statutory foreclosure laws, updated judicial law clerk checklist for foreclosure cases and evaluated such cases for compliance. Reviewed Motions for Default Judgment and made recommendations to Judge Krug for disposition.

Reviewed motions and case information to prepare Judge Lipp on issues for various hearings including lift-stay hearings, Chapter 11 and 13 plan confirmation hearings and lien strip-off hearings. Conducted legal research and drafted legal memoranda to assist Judge Lipp in drafting an opinion involving a case of first impression relating to the applicability of stripping of a wholly underwater second mortgage in a “Chapter 20” case.

Conducted research for company litigation, property acquisition, contracts and disputes. Drafted and edited various legal documents. Managed company collection cases. Organized, processed and occasionally attended property tax assessment appeals. Initiated and oversaw Landlord/Tenant cases. Filed business formations and amendments with SDAT. Organized with out-of-house counsel for registration of company trademarks. Collaborated with the Land & Development Department, county offices and the community for zoning, special exception and public works projects including sewer and construction easements.
