Communication Department Event Coordinator

Suny Geneseo Communication Department

Geneseo, New York, United States

As a Communication Department coordinating intern, I worked closely with other interns and faculty including the head of the department. The main event I assisted in planning was the annual Geneseo Insomnia Film Festival. For this exciting and creative event, students create teams and must write, film, and edit a short film within a 24 hour period. Then, at the Award Show, all films are shown and judges vote on first, second, and third place. My main responsibilities included creating new social media accounts, posting weekly, designing advertising posters, reserving locations, setting up catering, reaching out to businesses for sponsorships/donations, and more. Since this was the first year the Communication Department undertook the event, there were a handful of struggles, as was expected. However, by clearly communicating with interns and faculty, as well as maintaining a very organized to-do list and spreadsheet, we successfully continued this event for another year. Organizing the GIFF, and assisting with other Communication related projects such as the Senior Celebration, has further developed my passion for higher education and event coordinating. Show less

Restaurant Hostess

Williamsville, New York, United States

During my time as a hostess, I transformed the customer experience at this brand new restaurant. Due to its complicated nature--like ordering on an iPad, receiving food from a robot, and other new all-you-can-eat dining processes--I developed a script for hosts to follow in order to clearly explain the ordering process to new guests. I believe that this has continually made the experience better, easier, and more seamless for those who haven't dined with us before. I believe that this has continually made the experience better, easier, and more seamless for those who haven't dined with us before. I was able to thrive in this role by keeping reservations and duties organized, communicating with management and kitchen staff, and focusing heavily on customer satisfaction. After only a month as a host, I became the main trainer for new hires. I thoroughly enjoyed this role because I was able to teach new hosts the most effective way to do things, and how to facilitate the best experience for all guests of Wind. Show less

As a brand new course being introduced to the major, I valued the development of course content and an effective learning style above all. While working closely with the lecturing professor, we were able to develop this course from the ground up in a way that greatly benefits first year Communication students.I focused on many aspects of the course, from planning assignments and papers, to in class participation, to organizing a team of other Teaching Assistants. It was my duty to create course content and be a support system for the TAs or "Team Leaders." From semester to semester, myself and the professor made important changes to different aspects of the course in order to create the most effective learning experience for students. Thanks to all the time we've spent developing this course and the material, I believe it has become a very beneficial class for Communication students and anyone interested in a similar field. Shift Lead

East Amherst, New York, United States

At only 17 years old, I become one of the Shift Leads (or Key Holders) at Plato's Closet. This retail store buys gently used second hand clothing and sells them back to shoppers. It was my job to run the store when the manager wasn't there, as well as delegate tasks, organize clothes, answer the phone, post on social media, handle cash, open and close the store, and much more.
