The efficient processing of speech and emotional auditory cues, play a major role in social communication. However, there are individuals who have difficulties processing verbal and non-verbal social information. Individuals with ASD, for example, are characterized by impairments in social communication and interaction. Aims:The goal of the present project is to develop a series of innovative auditory EEG paradigms that quantify individual differences in socio-communicative sensitivity, and that are applicable in (preterm) infants and in pediatric populations with autism spectrum disorder. Methods:We apply fast periodic auditory stimulation in combination with scalp EEG. We plan to design paradigms that pinpoint individual differences in sensitivity for human vocal sounds in general, as well as to speaker identity and vocal emotional cues. Show less
