Analysis of large population-based cohorts e.g. Gutenberg Health Study, Mainz area, Germany and BiomarCaRE (former Monica and Morgam) cohorts. My research focused on cardiovascular diseases and gender differences with an emphasis on atrial fibrillation and its predictors.

Analysis, publication and presentation of public health and epidemiological data with special focus on trends, health inequalities and needs assessment, working across and liaising with partner organisations which span the public, private and third sector. Accessing and analysing large relational databases which hold birth, death, hospital admission, demographic and geographical data. Providing support and advice, on topics such as epidemiology, health intelligence, statistics and statistical techniques, health data sets and their limitations, research, survey design and questionnaire design.Examples:Swindon Mental Health Needs Assessment, Swindon Learning Disability Needs Assessment and Diabetes profile which forms the basis for determining the commissioning intentions of the Local Authority and Clinical Commissioning Group.Set up and maintained an Excel based “Public Health Information Switchboard” which provided easy access and helped with sharing of up-to-date public health data/resources for the public health and local authority teams. Developed an Excel-based dashboard for quarterly performance feedback to local GP practices and monitoring of cervical screening targets.Updated and reported on the annual UK National Child Measurement Programme data set in order to inform local planning and delivery of services. Regularly updated and reported on local suicide/self-harm data for suicide prevention work.

Data analysis, interpretation and presentation in response to internal and external requests for information. Specialist advice and guidance on health intelligence issues including the development and analysis of health related data sets and information. Adapting to change in priorities and demonstrating a flexible work approach. Examples:Lead analyst on the South Gloucestershire Joint Strategic Needs Assessment which describes the current and future health, health inequalities and care and well-being needs of a population.For the programme ‘Weight Management on Referral’ developed an Excel-based cost estimation tool which allows the user to change individual parameters such as numbers of attendees, dropout rates and the costs of individual modules. This work informed budgeting and commissioning for this programme, as well as the further development of the service. Managed the local National Child Measurement Programme data collection which included liaising with school health nurses, collating of the data, calculating BMI values and weight categories, creating parental feedback letters and uploading the data to the national database using the tools provided by the Information CentreDeveloped and monthly updated an Excel-based dashboard summarising an array of breastfeeding uptake data to facilitate evaluation of interventions and services.

Data extraction, statistical analyses and report writing in response to requests from health professionals and researchers to support policy makers and key stakeholders. Surveillance and monitoring of population trends, utilising spreadsheets, maps and analytical tools identifying vulnerable local populations, marginalised groups and describing local health inequalities, and supporting equality and diversity analyses. Examples:Original research on Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm mortality and hospital admissions to assess the efficacy of the UK-wide AAA Screening Programme. Prepared and presented work around cancer wait times, cancer incidence, mortality and survival at a Local Cancer Implementation Group meeting. Prepared and delivered presentation to public health analysts in the South West on Principal Component Analysis (Factor analysis).Prepared and analysed a large GP patient referral dataset with information on BMI, blood pressure and smoking statusand related these health variables to a range of underlying determinants (e.g. age, sex, deprivation, geographic location). Presented findings in a report circulated to NHS health professionals.

Site selection and sampling of benthic algae for the EU-project Standardisation of River Classification (STAR). Contributing to international meetings, conferences and training as part of the STAR project. Assisted with habitat and fish surveys, collecting, sorting and identification of stream biotic communities.Preparing outdoor artificial streams and running of experiments.

Team based habitat and water quality surveillance of streams and rivers. Sorting and identifying freshwater macroinvertebrates for water quality analysis purposes which included prioritising and managing workloads and meeting deadlines imposed by national authorities and EU laws.Data entry of field sheets and laboratory reports into a database for storage and analysis.Informing supervisors of data inconsistencies and data quality issues to ensure that the data analysis process would result in appropriate water quality management decisions for the Aarhus district.
