About Silvana Doumbouya

The essence of my work is all about new and powerful ideas, pursuing an opportunity and turning it into a sustainable model of operation. My work for the British Council, Inno Education and Octofun was all about creating a sustainable business model in educational services. My current instructional design work in the IT industry is all about applying design thinking to shift the focus of training from teaching to improving the quality of the trainees' work, while providing a better user experience for e-learning and closing the loop between training and quality assurance. I love working with people who are trying to achieve something no one has achieved before. I offer innovation backed up by a good understanding of business goals, careful planning and well designed procedures. Design thinking comes naturally to me and it is inevitable that I find ways of optimising processes in any work environment I am immersed in. I see the strengths of others and build on them and this has allowed me to perform very well in different fields and even in very different cultures. I am at my best when in a position that allows me to innovate, be a trailblazer, and boost the potential of others. I have successfully dealt with launching new services, creating a new niche in a market, team leadership, budget management, events management and ensuring high quality customer service and have contributed to developing medium and long-term business strategy. I have gained a good understanding of what it takes to run a business A to Z.I have had the opportunity of developing intercultural skills while working with British and Chinese partners and clients. I prefer working in a multicultural environment because diversity is a continuous source of enriching and delightful experiences for me.

    I am working together with a team of trainers and e-learning designers to continuously improve the learning journeys of new Darwin users. Darwin is a cloud-based solution for benefits administration that is currently used around the world. I work with internal stakeholder and I am passionate about closing the loop between training and quality assurance, so that updates to learning journeys can be informed by performance analytics and improvements in training can be reflected in performance.I have made a significant contribution to redesigning the client learning journey, creating materials that, in the words of the Training Manager, increased the quality of the e-learning we provide for clients by 300-400%. I used a design thinking approach to make training materials task oriented (more fit for purpose), lightweight, easier to navigate and more engaging. I also worked in synergy with the entire project team, making this a positive experience for all who were involved.I returned from childcare leave at the end of August 2021 and resumed my activity in this new role.

    I was part of the team that put together the first version of an intensive training program for enabling our regional representatives to work with our unique software and understand the processes behind the services that we were offering to our clients.I took the lead in redesigning the learning journeys for new joiners. Part of this was content-focused work, such as creating questionnaires, checklists and self-check tools for the new joiners’ practice. But I also worked to smoothen the communication between our team and the teams we were serving. My efforts were directed towards creating a closed loop in which quality assurance informed training, training was adjusted accordingly and the accuracy of the adjustments was checked with the help of those involved in quality assurance. I also advocated for role specialization to support our ambitious quality goals.My transition into this role was seamless, to the delight of my Line Manager, who had little hope of finding someone with both the advanced technical knowledge, very specific to the company’s software, and the training skills needed for the job. Becoming a TAP certified trainer (see https://tap.academy/) was an effortless part of my induction process; my TAP tutor was delighted with both my level of training skills and with the passion and delight I take in my work.A few weeks in the job, I took the initiative to revise the new joiner practice assessment procedure with my Line Manager. I took it from wildly unachievable to completely feasible.I started delivering training to company new joiners immediately and even delivered training to clients much sooner than had been planned for me. I have made a significant contribution to improving the atmosphere in the team, as I am willing to listen to very different points of view and empathise with conflicting perspectives.I started maternity/childcare leave in July 2019.

    The company's activity revolves around the delivery of a cloud based employee benefits management software to clients all around the world. Thomsons Online Benefits is a global leader in its market. As part of the software configuration team, I worked on projects where I had to deliver the software set up within the terms agreed with each client, using Agile methodology. I was part of different project teams made up of diverse roles split between London and Cluj-Napoca. On the technical side, I particularly enjoyed building bespoke reports to accommodate more complex requirements. This type of task required a lot of networking for technical know-how, imaginative thinking to cover all possible scenarios and a lot of experimenting with and testing of the potential solutions. I enjoyed guiding clients or project team members towards alternative solutions that would better fit the purpose and finding ways of filling the communication gaps. I proactively offered feedback to support the improvement of procedures and I have created a personal record of lessons learnt in software configuration to share with colleagues in my team. I initiated a focus group to identify the gaps between technical training and software configuration practice. I suggested ways of improving teamwork and focus on quality goals in our team.

    I have replaced the Director during maternity leave.I suggested that Octofun Academy use Individualised Education Plans (that I had started developing for my clients in China) for all children enrolled at their centre; the founder of Octofun Academy was very pleased with the idea and so were the parents of the children. Octofun is now using the idea of personalised development plan as a key selling point in their marketing strategy. I work with the teachers and parents to implement these education plans.I deliver presentations to potential clients and I act as their contact person subsequently, guiding them throughout the entire adjustment process and handling any other issues related to their suggestions or concerns.I adapted the national preschool curriculum to fit the principles of Octofun's educational philosophy.I suggested that the centre layout be changed so that a new group of children could be accommodated, given the high demand for a certain age group; the new group is now full and there is also a growing waiting list for that age group.I made an important contribution to the development of internal procedures to guide the existing personnel and ease the induction of new personnel.I am offering guidance to new teachers in selecting appropriate activities and in classroom management.

    This company was initially just recruiting Western Au-pairs for Chinese families and the Director wanted a differentiation strategy to help them compete in an over-saturated market. I suggested that they also offered Individualised Education Plans for all the children whom they matched with Au-pairs and helped them develop and implement the project. I selected and trained the new Au-pairs and facilitated the often difficult intercultural dialogue between the Western Au-pairs on one side and the company and the host families on the other side. I reshaped the recruitment process and created induction documents to ease the adjustment of the Au-pairs to the Chinese family environment. I offered parental coaching in a social environment where parenting and education are now facing great challenges, unparalleled in the Western World. I worked to quickly improve my spoken and written Chinese language skills to optimize the communication with clients.

    The British Council is the main British international organisation for intercultural relations. I successfully led the centre in Cluj through times of major organisational change. As a member of the national senior team, I participated in shaping strategic decisions at national level.
