About Silvia D'Amico, Phd
My name is Silvia D'Amico, class of 1989 and my "problems" with Science started at the age of six. Over time, I planned to exercise at least ten different professions, but all with a scientific theme. As of today, by luck or choice, I have a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology and work in oncology preclinical research, but writing continues to fascinate me as it did on day one. O the other hand, my love for science outreach blossomed along with my undergraduate studies. I've always loved to write, but when I started to delve into the field of biology, I realized the gap between the subject and the conception that non-experts have of it.I began writing on a few blogs, then working with a popular science association, and finally serving as editor-in-chief of the science section of a fledgling online magazine. As my path on the road of research went on, the distance between Science and Society appeared in front of me as bigger and bigger, but unbridgeable only in appearance. In the meantime my commitments have increased, but the desire to communicate did not decrease. Since two years I am part of a social project which aims to spread adapted exercise for women with breast cancer and to inform about the potential of exercise as a "companion" to cancer therapies essentially through popular articles with a solid background of scientific literature. Where do I see myself tomorrow? Doing research and writing about science, whether for work or pleasure, is something I am unlikely to ever part with.“Do or do not. There is no try.” - Yoda
