About Silvia D'Ascoli

Italian lawyer and international criminal prosecutor. Between 2007 and 2016, I worked for the Office of the Prosecutor of the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), and the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT), in several cases including Prosecutor v. Ratko Mladić. Before joining the ICTY, I worked as a researcher at the European University Institute (Florence, Italy), where I obtained my Ph.D in Law in 2008. I published a monograph on Sentencing in International Criminal Law (Hart Publishing, Oxford, 2011) from my PhD thesis. Between 2011 and 2018, I was a visiting lecturer at the Université Catholique de Lille in human rights and international criminal tribunals. I regularly publish in international legal journals.My experience also includes work with NGOs (Amnesty International, Advocats Sans Frontières, Intersos). I collaborated with Amnesty International (AI) from 1997 to 2009, and was involved in human rights research and training at national and international level on behalf of AI. I served within the Italian Training Network of AI; I was a member of AI's Italian Committee on Refugee and Migration; of the Board Committee on International Policy; a research assistant at the International Secretariat of AI, in London; and a member of the Italian Delegation to the 2007 International Council Meeting of AI, in Mexico. For Intersos, I worked as Head-of-Project of a refugee/migrant-related project in Calabria (Italy), funded by the Italian Ministry of Interior and the EU.
