My interest in the EE field developed in my early teens. As my interest in music increased, so did my interest in the equipment that produced the sweet sounds of Nirvana, Kriss Kross, and Boyz II Men. While my interest in one of those bands waned (guess which) into my mid teens, my curiosity regarding how the electronic equipment worked increased when I started to assemble my first car audio setup. How did FM signals get from the station to my Blaupunkt receiver? How did the amplifiers convert a small signal into an inappropriately loud one? Why can't I use my efficient class D amplifier on mid-range speakers? How is an electrical charge being converted into a mechanical force in the speakers? After a successful but unfulfilling year majoring in business, I made the switch to the field focusing on my hobby. My interest shifted from the smaller scale to larger power systems (from watts to megawatts), but I still answered my teenage questions along the way. How phase locked loops can demodulate FM signals. How amplifiers work. That class D amplifiers require more complex filters and have a poor damping factor. That a force can be created from a magnetic flux and an inductor with a current running through it. I wasn't as interested in spending money on audio systems as I was at my younger age, and none of this was learned in audio-specific classes, but it was very cool deducing the answers after being given general information.My education focused on the power field. This included power, power systems (power flow analysis, economic dispatch), and machinery. I also was very interested in both electronics classes (focusing on the aforementioned amplification techniques). Unfortunately, a class combining my two favorite fields (power electronics) was not offered during my time as an undergraduate; however, my Senior Design project gave me an opportunity to focus on this material, allowing me to work with three other students to build a variable frequency drive.
