Simel Esim heads the Cooperative, Social and Solidarity Economy Unit at the International Labour Office (ILO). She is the Co-Chair of the United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on the Social and Solidarity Economy (UNTFSSE). She serves on the board of Women in Informal Economy Globalizing Organizing (WIEGO) and is a member of the international advisory committee of its Organizing and Representation Programme. Dr. Esim represents the ILO on the Board of the Committee on the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC). She is also a member of the CIRIEC Scientific Commission on Social and Cooperative Economy. Between 2004-2012, Simel led the work of the ILO on gender equality, women workers’ rights, transition from the informal to the formal economy, and decent work for domestic workers in Arab States. Before joining the ILO, Dr. Esim has worked on and written extensively about cooperatives, social and solidarity economy, gender responsive budgeting, women economic empowerment and the informal economy including in the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), WIEGO, Development Alternatives, Inc. (DAI), and the World Bank. She is a co-editor of Cooperatives and the World of Work (2019 Routledge).Simel holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the American University, Washington, D.C, an M.A. in International Economics and Middle East Studies from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and a B.A. in Political Science from Boğaziçi University. Simel speaks Turkish and English, and has working knowledge of Italian, French and Arabic. She is a beginner in Spanish.
