At Xerra, I developed software applications primarily in Go and Python. I built, tested and deployed them with git-driven CD/CI, and I ran them in the cloud with Kubernetes. This role linked my background in software design and development (especially in the space/EO industry) together with my extensive experience infrastructure, cloud platforms and DevOps.

FAUCET is an open-source OpenFlow controller with a reputation for being legitimately useful for building and running enterprise networks (https://faucet.nz/). At Berkeley Lab, I led the team of engineers who build and support the wired and wireless networks, and related services; deliver joint software/hardware projects with the LBL cyber-security team; and build special purpose networks for LBL research groups with large data processing and storage needs.

This contract was to prepare TENET to be the eduroam Roaming Operator in South Africa. I designed a BGP anycast-enabled distributed/redundant RADIUS proxy service; developed Docker-based integration tests; and prepared and tested Ansible playbooks to enable the NOC team to deploy the service in production.

At SANReN, I was responsible for technical network design and roll-out of the ultra high-speed South African research and education network. I led a team that built MPLS and DWDM optical transmission systems and piloted network services such as eduroam. I served on the SKA network design consortium and the global eduroam governance committee.

At the remote sensing research unit, I developed software in C++ and Python for processing time series of satellite image data. I wrote a library for a custom data-cube format, and then together with researchers, used it to build tools for detecting vegetation growth, land cover change, and seasonal fire patterns.
