I grew up in Pretoria with a family that loves flying and adventure. We have traveled the world together and experienced a variety of different cultures and activities that are both fascinating and thrilling. Both flying and traveling remain two things I enjoy, now with the addition of taking my wife with me on these adventures.When asked what I wanted to study after matric my only thought was Mechanical Engineering, partly due to my natural knack for math and mostly due to a curiosity to know more. During the grueling and character building 4 years of the Mechanical Engineering Degree at Stellenbosch University I discovered a secret enjoyment of programming (something I had never done before). My fascination with programming lies in everything that can be accomplished by teaching a computer how to logically solve complex problems. Another field that I enjoy both due to its complexity and its application is Vibrations (the good and the bad). I pursued post graduate course work and research in the areas of Vibration Based Condition Monitoring, Experimental Structural Dynamics and Optical Measurement Techniques at the University of Pretoria. I am currently still busy with my Masters Research, something that is difficult to complete while working full-time in a field I enjoy. I am one of those Mechanical Engineers who actually does what a I studied to do. My current work at Kwatani entails designing and testing vibrating screens for the mining and commercial industry. All our designs are simulation driven using Finite Element Analysis to ensure the lifelong structural integrity of our screens and feeders. Our testing entails factory acceptance testing as well as site testing. The testing is what I enjoy most, as it involves the measurement of multiple sensors including accelerometers and tachometers and then processing all the raw data such that insight can be gained into the dynamics of our machines. The insights obtained are correlated with our simulations to ensure confidence in our modelling techniques. I have a passion for learning new skills and finding an application for them where I work. I enjoy programming and am actively involved in a project at Kwatani that involves online condition monitoring of all our vibrating equipment over the world.
