I have over has over 34 years of experience as an alcohol and drug counselor and behavioral consultant. He specializes in practical, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed strategies that address chemical dependency, interpersonal violence, and trauma, with a focus on improving outcomes for African American males and their families.He developed and managed a culturally specific, trauma-informed curriculum aimed at engaging African American men and boys to stop violence against women and girls while promoting healthy, nonviolent relationships. Sam is also an Adverse Childhood Experience Interface Trainer in Minnesota and is certified as an administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI).In 2008, he created training sessions focused on historical trauma as part of a broader range of culturally sensitive, trauma-informed projects and initiatives. These initiatives aim to build collaborations with likely and unlikely partners to challenge systems and institutions, both inside and outside communities of color, that create barriers to healing and empowerment, ultimately fostering healthier lives and communities.In 2020, Sam was invited to assist organizations in tackling the challenges of recruiting and retaining African Americans and other staff of color, as well as developing culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, diverse organizational practices. In 2024, he received Minnesota’s Professional of the Year Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Minnesota for his exceptional work with Black men.Sam co-hosts the "Voices" radio show on KMOJ FM, which addresses issues affecting the urban community. He is highly respected across the country for his informed work on African American historical trauma and for his successful Community Empowerment Through Black Men Healing Conference, which has been described as “groundbreaking and visionary.” He is also the author of "Just Sam: A Black Man's Journey to Healing," a book that deeply explores the impact of trauma on Black men and the community while providing a roadmap for moving beyond mere resilience to healing and empowerment. He emphasizes, “A community is as strong as the information it’s given.”
