The project will enable new opportunities for improving material science research with positive impact on our everyday lives.The objectives of the master thesis was to study, design, simulation and control of the input stage of the high voltage and high power frequency converters required to supply the Radio Frequency amplifiers, Klystrons, of the ESS proton accelerator.The subsystems is formed by an AFE (Active Front End) power converter associated with a fast DC/DC (step-down converter) converter and is used to charge the intermediate stage capacitor bank at constant power, despite the pulsed nature of the load. The project was to assure correct regulation of the power converter structures in such a way that the capacitor bank is correctly charged and simultaneously assure constant power absorption from the AC grid with low current harmonic distortion, unitary power factor therefore respecting the existing international standards (International Electrotechnical Commission) in power quality issues including flicker.
