Meny is a high-end chain of grocery stores in Norway, widely recognized for professionalism and high quality. I have primarily served as a cashier. As I held this job alongside my studies, most of my shifts were afternoons/evenings and weekends. Eventually, I was tasked with making sure the cashiers department is run smoothly – in essence, I functioned as a deputy department manager. I managed staff breaks and floor rotation, handled customer complaints, and counted and moved all cash from registers to night safe after closing time. My professional and friendly attitude made me popular with the customers, several of whom informed me that they actively choose to pay at my register, even if the lines were shorter elsewhere. This was very rewarding and motivating.

I applied to be a lay judge in the fall of 2012, and after clearing a background check I functioned as a court lay judge in various trials. Together with another lay judge and one professional judge, I was tasked with listening to prosecutors, defendants, and witnesses, sorting fact from fiction, and cooperate with the other judges not only to find defendants guilty or innocent, but also to decide what punishment, if any, should be given in each case.

My first part time job as a student was with Bemanningshuset AS, a local temp agency, where I worked as a substitute teacher and an exam official at elementary and secondary schools throughout Oslo, usually at a day's notice. This meant I had to be flexible, and had to be able to interact with children and youths with all kinds of social, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, which was very interesting.

After initially being hired as a part time after-school program assistant, by the end of the year I had clocked a double-digit number of hours as a substitute teacher, coached the school floorball team to their first regional championship title in 12 years, and been included in the school’s special education team as the only employee without formal education.

I went through extensive first aid, weapons, and hand-to-hand combat training as well as basic military, police and law classroom education. I also completed two voluntary written exams.
