On 10/07/19, I commenced my career as a civil engineer working as part of a bridges team at WSP based in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. I am proud to work for a thriving company and I have met some amazing individuals and engaged in diverse projects. During my time at WSP, I have engaged in a wide range of work which includes production of CAD drawings, production of hand calculations, structural element design work, bridge inspection work, risk assessment review and production, and design and assessment to engineering standards. I was involved in the design of wingwalls for a bridge design as part of High-Speed Rail 2. This involved me checking the design specification of the retaining wall stems to ensure they were adequate when loaded. I also carried out thermal and punching shear checks to the wall bases to ensure the pile foundations would not punch through them under loaded conditions. The inspection of Wearmouth bridge is the largest structure I have worked with in my career. I carried out inspection of truss elements of the arch from the deck level to the crown. I also supervised sub-contractor staff who inspected the underside of the structure. I graduated with an MEng Degree in civil engineering at Teesside University with a fantasic grade average of 2:1. The support I received from my professional and personal network of invidivduals was intergral to this achievement. I stuidied a wide range of modules including, Advanced Geotech, Hydraulics and Water Engineering, Advanced Structural Analyis and Design, and FEA for both soils and structures alongside group project work. In my third year, I carried out a stability analysis for a cutting slope on the A19 widening Wynyard to Norton project. I used SlopeW software to analyse the slope stability and offer engineering solutions. In my final year, I carried out a study of constiutive soil models for Mercia Mudstone behaviour which was encounted by AECOM whom I worked with to select the most suitable model. I used FEA software PLAXIS2D to analyse the soil behaviour under cyclic loading. I continue to study all areas of Civil Engineering in my own time as part of my personal professional development. I am currently working towards becoming chartered with the ICE.
