About Simon Asquith

Dr Simon Asquith leads the University of Birmingham's Postgraduate Programmes in Educational Leadership within the School of Education. He is an Associate Professor of Educational Leadership within the Department of Education and Social Justice.Simon has taught in the school sector in Leeds, Bradford and Cumbria and has lectured in teacher education and in geography and geographical and environmental education at Liverpool Hope University. He has held leadership roles in teacher education and education partnerships at Liverpool Hope University and the University of Cumbria and has written widely in the fields of primary geography and geographical learning, teacher education and school leadership. Recent research activity focuses on school leader positioning in the context of government policy and approaches to school sector system change and leadership within changing partnership contexts. In this Simon has particular interest in the position of headteachers, especially those working within Multi Academy Trusts and Teaching School Hubs and those engaged in 'school-to-school support' within what has become known as the 'self-improving school system' in England.Simon is a Doctor of Education (EdD), earned at the University of Birmingham. He has held Chief External and External Examiner positions at the University of the West of Scotland, Sheffield Hallam University, Bath Spa University and the University of East Anglia. He is past-chair of the Association for Partnership in Teacher Education and has been a member of the National Executive of the Universities' Council for the Education of Teachers. He has undertaken national review roles for Ofsted and the TTA (now DfE) as well as for a number of universities. Simon was Academic Secretary to the West Midlands Grouping of Schools working with the University of Birmingham and the University's own 'University of Birmingham School' for two years from 2013. Simon has chaired and been a member of a number of primary and secondary school governing bodies in Cheshire, West Yorkshire and Cumbria. He is a member of the British Educational Leadership, Management and Administration Society, the Geographical Association, the Commonwealth Council for Educational Administration and the Society for Educational Studies. He is a Professional Affiliate of the Chartered College of Teaching.
