About Simon Barter
Throughout my life I’ve had a passion for understanding the physical world. In my later years this manifested as a love for physics which works to precisely and repeatedly predict physical phenomena. Now I wish to share my knowledge through a variety of creative projects with a fundamental goal of better understanding the world around us.In completing a Bachelor of Science (BSc) double majoring in Physics and Geophysics, I have developed a refined mathematical and logic-based approach to my work. This comes hand-in-hand with a comprehensive understanding of coding and various scientific, statistical, and data visualization packages. For my Bachelor of Science with Honours (BScH) qualification I specialized in Geophysics and conducted research into the location of seismic events within Auckland. By accessing data directly from GeoNet’s online database I was able to describe trends and patterns in seismicity which ultimately led to the proposal of an updated geological model accompanied by an appropriate statistical investigation. In my latest year of study I returned to the field of physics. This most recent qualification and time spent as a research assistant have proven my proficiency in numerical modelling and simulation. In the latter example I worked to numerically model experimentally observed bright and dark optical solitons generated within a fiber-laser system. I then completed a Master of Science (MSc) degree. My thesis project involved the design of a single-pass electro-optic modulator based system for the generation of frequency-agile optical frequency combs, and their implementation in dual-comb spectroscopy. Such systems have an abundance of industry applications and have even demonstrated real-time, in-situ measurements of the methane emission of cattle. This provided invaluable hands-on experience with a variety of complex electronic and fiber-optic systems. Ultimately, I successfully produced a comprehensive investigation into the proposed technique and its strengths and weaknesses within the existing field of research.I found these projects particularly rewarding as they were highly motivated by real-world applications when, typically, experimental work is confined to the testing of more theoretical ideas. Moving forward I am highly driven to apply my unique knowledge to creative industry projects. Such endeavours may take the form of either employment opportunities or PhD projects. No matter what role I eventually fill, I hope to derive immense personal fulfilment from a clear vision of the practical motivations for my work.
