In my master thesis I have investigated the possibility to store waste heat from Boliden Rönnskär (Europe's third largest copper smelter) in two rock caverns, thus reducing their oil consumption. This was investigated by studying the smelter's internal energy system to calculate how much energy could be charged intermittently and how much could be discharged to lower the oil consumption. By constructing a dynamic model of the caverns in SIMULINK, it was used with the calculated charge pattern to see how the cavern would react to it on a by hour basis. This showed that a average operating year would give Boliden AB big economical savings and large environmental benefits.
