Activities included:• Audit of skills, competencies and professional experience.• Professional career guidance to identify suitable roles and sectors of the economy.• Development of network of contacts.• Experiencing of using skills in different environment through voluntary work with Ashridge Estate, National Trust.• Series of ambitious personal challenges including Marathon du Mont Blanc; 85 mile ultramarathon and participating in sailing tour of Antarctic as crew performing lookout, helm, sail handling and emergency duties.

Managed and developed £25m fund to turn research ideas into businesses. The projects supported by this fund achieved significant results, including creation of 150 new businesses, with total value of over £90m, and generating over £100m per annum of new income.Responsible for financial management for team with over £500m budget and developed business plan which ensured this funding was used effectively to meet Government’s objectives. This business plan ensured that the major successes were achieved, including doubling universities’ commercial income between 2001 and 2009 and modernising research facilities across UK Higher Education Institutions.Developed a completely new survey to measure the impact on the economy of government research organisations – an area where information had not been collected before. Carried out extensive research and worked with the organisations providing the data to get their engagement. Survey run for several years and the findings used in negotiations with Treasury on funding for science, to demonstrate the economic benefits of public sector research.

Led for UK in negotiations with European Commission on contracts used by businesses and researchers taking part in €18bn European Framework Programme for Research. Secured changes to contracts and rates of funding provided. Helped UK to obtain 14.2% of funds from Framework Programme (second only to Germany).Managed network of National Contact Points to support UK participants in Framework Programme for Research. Included £2m tender for contractors, which complied with EU procurement rules. Contact Points’ role in helping UK researchers secure funding acknowledged by Parliament.

Policy advisor and speech writer for Minster for Corporate Social Responsibility. Research on initiatives across government to promote Corporate Social Responsibility. Developed policy positions which were used by Ministers publicly to explain Government policies.Managed assessment of performance by Government’s Regional Offices against targets set in Service Level Agreements. Ensured that senior officials had robust management information on performance against targets. Representing Department of Trade and Industry and successors through regular contact with senior figures in government, business and the academic community. Department’s representative on Business in the Community’s Business Impact Task Force.

Simplified process for charities to receive income from trading subsidiaries. This ensured they would receive this income more quickly and with less administrative costs.Secured significant reduction in volume of guidance material businesses would need to assimilate on Disability Discrimination Act 1995 from nearly 100 pages to 20 pages.

Managed effective negotiations with Department’s Trade Union representatives. Ensured compliance with legal requirements on time allowed for Trade Union activities. Developed training course on industrial relations.
