The Guardian was a trailing a very distant fifth in a market of five. He immediately re-energised the team, recruited new execs and went about securing high-profile and profitable business from Europe to turn the situation around. Major accounts from the Italian luxury market, including Armani and Prada (jointly worth in total £1.5 million net) became the bedrock on which further, more esoteric business was built. The Armani Monography showcased the client in an innovative and visually stunning way, and a marketing programme devised by Simon, showed the world that the Guardian was a now a force to be reckoned with and an outstanding platform for upscale brands.He sought out, appointed and trained a new network of reps capable of delivering the Guardian promise at a local level. He organised training seminars in London where the reps gained first-hand insight of commercial and editorial policy and ensured the International team had the backing of senior editors as well as Ad Directors and Managing Directors. He trained reps on all aspects of the GNM sell, including intensive workshops on digital salesHe drove revenues to unprecedented levels, (£5million+ per annum by 2005) while strictly managing costs.He sold directly to clients and agencies in territories as far apart as Germany and Malaysia and built a management reporting process which allowed close monitoring of sales effectiveness by region, territory and rep.He turned the international department from a moribund outpost to a core part of the Guardian proposition.
