Infrastructure focused developer with 20 years of experience in many tools, with specific expertise with Python, Javascript, PostgreSQL, and SQlite, as well as broader processes like CI, deployment pipelines, cloud orchestration, telemetry, and operating complex production systems.My focus has been on infrastructure and operations on whole variety of web applications. This includes building developer-friendly tooling that integrates operational concerns from the ground up (e.g deployability, observability, security). This naturally extends to building and maintaining CI and deployment pipelines with orchestration that enable teams to move quickly whilst still able to DTRT operationally. I have also taken a lead on incident response, include retrospectives and prioritising redesign to reducing incident frequency. I have lead initiatives in multiple organisations to improve and integrate telemetry and observability, training colleagues and building it in to regular practices.I really enjoy building things that users love to use, and love engaging with users regularly to receive feedback and deepen my understanding of the domain. All of my roles have had a significant user facing aspect to the work, which has also been the best part of the job for me. I have worked as a generalist in smaller companies, and specialist in larger ones, and enjoy both extremes.

Senior Platform Engineer
Senior Research Software Engineer
Responsible for infrastructure, telemetry and security as part of a small embedded team of industry software engineers, building the innovative OpenSAFELY platform, which delivers efficient privacy preserving and life saving research using medical health data. Also involved heavily in product design and delivery, and hands on user support and incident response.The platform is built with heavy Github integration, with a Python and PostgreSQL/Sqlite stack, and a very security sensitive on-prem component. I have led on operational and security design, making heavy use of Docker, Ansible, OpenTelemetry w/Honeycomb, and Github actions. I have also led on a user facing cross platform development tool that allows our users to develop their research code, using our entire stack, locally on their own machines.

I worked in the Online Services team, developing infrastructure and tooling to support the set of services around Snap packages and Ubuntu Core. I worked on the various web applications, but I was mainly focused on orchestration, telemetry, and observability, and as part of this, built in-house tooling to build these concerns into our applications from devenv onwards, which I then championed and was adopted across multiple teams within Canonical. I help design, build, and then support the on-prem version of the Snap Store for our customers.

Technical lead in innovative UK Health IT startup, taking it from being employee no 1 to 7 developers, and developing multiple national Health IT products, mostly notably, NPEx, the National Pathology exchange.Primary technology was a Microsoft stack: Windows, .NET, C#, Javascript, MSSQL and BizTalk. Developing the product from scratch hand in hand with our early customers, my role was very user focused, include sales and marketing, as a small company. The system was deployed and scaled on the secure N3 NHS backbone network, and has not become a key piece of national infrastructure, and played a key part in the COVID testing during the pandemic.
