My research group works is specialized in Plasma Engineering. My personal masters project is focused on plasma activated liquids (PALs), analyzing and characterizing them. My personal masters project is focused on plasma activated liquids (PALs), analyzing and characterizing them. In a plasma liquid activated medium, several reactive oxygen and nitrogen species are generated (depending on the atmosphere around the liquid), as well as metallic species generated from the erosion of the cathode electrode of the reactor. These metallic species are either in ionic or particle form. It is my job to quantify all these species through several instrumental/analytical methods, as well as describe a method in controlling them, especially when it comes to dealing with nanoparticles size control and design. Through the various parameters of controlling a plasma-to-liquid system, the possibilities of nanoparticle design are almost infinite and this field is not quite ventured yet in literature review. More generically, plasma-to-liquid studies is a very novel field in engineering and has been proposed to have great potential in treating water pollution with no lethal byproducts, very efficient energy usage and no great economic investment. Many other applications include plasma medicine, where plasma activated water is used to kill tumor cells exposed to it with a higher percentage of selectivity (targeting specifically cancer cells and avoiding healthy cells). I had the opportunity to work on my Honors Project in Prof. Ariya’s Analytical/Atmospheric laboratory. My project consisted of designing the most efficient purely inorganic ice-nuclei with an environmental mission of remediating mercury – a toxic pollutant – form the atmosphere. In other words, I had the opportunity to experience how Chemistry can be incorporated to solve tangible practicalities. The ice-nuclei was composed of naturally ubiquitous kaolin dust particles bonded with Iron(0) to form a composite nanoparticle. When adhered to mercuric ions in the presence of chloride ions in solution, this nanocomposite yielded tremendous ice nucleating results in comparison to bacteria – one of the most efficient ice-nuclei known. I would also like to mention another remarkable project that I was involved in with Mainak Ganguly (a Post-Doc student): conducting rheological measurements of a purely inorganogel (metallogel) composed of silver(I) and vanadate ions with no presence of carbon in the gel skeleton. This newfound metallogel has the ability of sequestering gas, dye and toxic pollutants from water bodies. This project was yet another testament to the potential power of change that the innovation in material chemistry can bring to our vulnerable environment. Show less
