I previously sat on the ICE Education and Careers Panel and I am a keen supporter of apprenticeships and encouraging young people into the engineering industry. I am proud to have developed the South West Griffiths Business from a £5m turnover business based in/around Bristol to a projected £60m business unit in 2021 with a geographical spread across South West England, including major projects such as South Bristol Link, Metrobus, Wichelstowe Southern Access, M5 J25 Improvements, St Austell Link and the Portsmouth City Framework. I am also proud to have expanded our sector capabilities into new areas including aviation at Bristol Airport and clean water utilities with Bristol Water. Most importantly I am proud of the team that we have developed within the region growing to near 200 people in the space of 5 years.I have held a variety of positions within Griffiths and have progressed through the business to my current role of Pre-Construction Director, sitting on the Operating Board for the business. This has enabled me to gain a detailed understanding of the organisation both from an operational and commercial perspective in addition to head office functions.I believe strongly in the power of the wider Tarmac/CRH business in enhancing what we as a business can offer, introducing clients to value-added products within Tarmac and wider CRH companies such as Cubis and Farrans. I have a PhD in sustainable construction materials which has given me a great experience in research methods and problem solving in addition to enabling me to travel extensively and present at 2 international and 1 national conference. Avonmouth WindfarmThe Balance of Plant Contract was a Design and Build NEC Option A Contract with a value of circa £2m.As Project Manager I was responsible for design coordination with both civil and electrical designers, procurement of sub-contracts and materials including preparation and negotiation of sub-contracts under NEC sub-contract, commercial management and the management of site team including Site Agent, Engineer, Works Manager and various Sub-Contractors.The Project comprised of the detailed engineering investigation, design and construction of the Balance of Plant Works for a two turbine 5MW windfarm. Works included highway works, site access roads, crane pads, foundation works, earthworks, electrical works, switch gear building and acting as Principal Contractor under Construction Design and Management Regulations 2007. Turbine bases were founded on 17No 900mm diameter 27m deep bored piles, the size of which were determined following the installation of test piles and detailed analysis of the results. Each turbine base consisted of 400m3 of concrete and 40t reinforcement, reduced from 600m3 through value engineering of the base configuration. Site roads and crane pads were constructed using a combination of Geogrid and recycled Type 1 due to the poor estuarine ground conditions. A sub-station building was constructed above flood level on a 3.5m high mound constructed using recycled and site won material. The building was of brick/block construction and consisted of 2No. Control Rooms, 2No. HV Switch Rooms and 2No. meter rooms. All works were carried out in conjunction with an ecologists as the site is located in an ecologicaly sensitive area, works also involved the establishment of reptile fencing and “receptor areas”. Further site constraints were an adjacent above ground government oil pipeline and railway.

Weston Package, Schemes SE2-SE5Responsible for project team consisting of 2 Agents, 3 Engineers, QS, 4 Works Managers, Planner, Public Liaison Officer and upto 100 operatives/contractors at its peak to ensure the successful delivery of circa £5m+ NEC Option A contract consisting of 4 individual Schemes collectively known as the Weston Package. The Weston Package consists of 4 individual schemes located across Weston to improve pedestrian transport into and around Weston. A new bus terminus was constructed at Queensway whilst maintaining existing bus traffic, fed by a new bus lane scheme adjacent to a busy retail park entrance. A new 320 space car park was also constructed on a brownfield site consisting of significant earthworks and drainage works prior to the construction of a tarmac surfaced car park adjacent to the main railway line. The final scheme was the dualling of a 1km stretch of the main A370 route into Weston. This project involved dealing with 2000m3 of contaminated arisings taken to a remediation facility and large volumes of earthworks on a cut/fill balance along the narrow scheme adjacent to a busy retail park. The works were completed with minimal disruption to the public and involved significant amount of public liaison. Construction was phased to ensure traffic flows and local businesses were not affected including the construction of a new roundabout on the line of the existing road which maintained 2 lane traffic by diverting traffic onto a temporary road. Managing public perception was a key aspect of the project and recognized by scoring Excellent in the Considerate Constructors Scheme Assessment. The project was completed 3 months ahead of schedule and open for the Christmas shopping period.

Cotswold Canal Restoration – Capels Mill SectionResponsible for managing site team consisting of Works Manager, Engineer, QS, operatives and numerous sub-contractors on circa £3.4m NEC3 Option C contract to construct a new section of canal approx. 320m in length to reconnect the Cotswold Canal. The work included a 110m clay lined section with 7.5m length sheet piles and tow path on one side, diversion of high pressure watermain and HV cable under canal, 25m concrete trough through a Network Rail Viaduct and a 185m concrete channel cut through an old landfill site and adjacent to the River Frome and founded on 310No. driven steel cased piles. The landfill is retained by a 185m long contiguous bored pile wall constructed with 205No. 750mm diameter 15m deep bored piles tied with a large concrete capping beam and anchored such that a retained height of 7m is achievable. Approximately 25,000m3 of material was excavated using the CL:AIRE code of practice with the majority remaining on site forming a picnic area. Additional works included installing scour protection into the river at pinch points, refurbishing headwalls of aqueduct carrying canal over River Frome and construction of gas membrane system on old landfill prior to profiling and landscaping. Detailed programming and liaison with various sub-contractors was required to ensure no conflicts occur and programme can be optimised. In addition, liaison with the Environment Agency and Network rail was important and a comprehensive Earthworks Register was maintained due to location of landfill. Archaeologists were also utilised due to the heritage value of the site. Various value engineering opportunities were identified and utilised including the use of driven piles as opposed to screw piles to support the concrete trough.
