Emergency MedicineKey Skill - CommunicationSomething I am acutely aware of is the need for effective communication for satisfactory outcomes. I have therefore always aimed to improve myself and evolve my styles of communication. This year, I have received personal mention in the ‘Friends and Family’ feedback mechanisms for patients visiting the emergency department at Poole and in the hospital newsletter. Almost monthly I have received a letter from the clinical director thanking me for my patient care.Key Skill - LeadershipTo be the most senior doctor in an emergency department was a steep learning curve. Here I have demonstrated an ability to cope under pressure when presented with multiple problems. I have shown that I can multi-task and prioritise to ensure patient safety.

Key Skill - TeamworkIn my final year of this specialist training I began to assume higher levels of responsibility, thus my role changed from member to leader. I therefore attempted to hone my skills with the subtle nuances from both points of view. The multidisciplinary formal feedback received during this year was of a very high standard and was commented upon in my yearly appraisal.

Key Skill - TeachingIn my first year as a doctor I quickly realised a love for teaching complex scientific concepts to the next generation. My efforts were rewarded at the Recognising and Rewarding Excellence in Medical Education awards where I received the title of ‘Most Helpful, Obliging and Supportive Foundation Doctor to Medical Students’. My endeavours have been repeatedly rewarded with letters of thanks for my efforts in subsequent years.
