About Simon Forbes
Across 30 years experience in human genomics & bioinformatics, I’ve been very excited to watch genomic medicine evolve from niche academic research into clinical standard-of-care for an expanding range of diseases. Over this time, I have successfully led research across multiple genes and diseases, directing large genomic systems and resources to focus on huge data scale, quality and usefulness, and these now underpin some of the world's precision medicine developments.With NGS DNA & ‘Omic technologies becoming easily accessible, I am now helping expand their impact across human health, wellness and agriculture. At high scale, these technologies provide an incredible way to detect disease, infection, wellness needs & contamination, but often create large-scale high-complexity data challenges. Working with the remarkably capable team at Sagentia Innovation, I’m again excited to address these challenges to help clients deploy genomic technologies to improve all our lives.

Director of the cancer genetics project “COSMIC” (https://cancer.sanger.ac.uk), the world’s largest curated data system describing the genetics behind all human cancers.With substantial experience in genetic research and data systems, I led a large team of informatic and scientific specialists supporting global research in cancer genetics, particularly focused on informing diagnostic and pharmaceutical R&D. Successful in promoting our work across the world, I developed COSMIC into a common requirement underpinning global cancer research. I expanded our product range to ensure the generation of knowledge from big complex data, enhancing the impact and value of our systems across precision medicine.From academic beginnings, I strongly pursued industrial engagement and commercial development, ensuring over £millions in commercial revenue and partnership funding. Working with industrial partners guarantees novel developments successfully meet immediate needs, and pursuing a commercial license sales programme empowered us to build at a globally competitive scale. Keen to engage with our diverse audience, I participate in scientific & IT conferences, industrial engagement events, webinars, panel interviews and consultations, and teach students from sixth-form to PhD.
