Both work streams required design, build, test, and implementation of a centralised, data centre based infrastructure. Whilst the Intranet roll-out was a ‘switch-on’ of capability accessed from the legacy desktop estate, the VOIP work stream included a physical roll-out of ~4100 IP handsets across all sites, whilst being mindful maintain existing service and critical telephony capability. As well as managing 4 CGI project managers during this engagement, Simon also managed third party sub-contractors to deliver key infrastructure components. The intranet project was successfully delivered to time, costs and quality for launch of the new organisation, but the telephony project was deferred by the Agency before the pilot roll-out. Also, when first joining the programme, Simon managed the WAN/LAN work stream through to completion of the design stage. Show less -

It also included the migration from existing production systems such as active directory, email, thin client and an array of client specific applications. To achieve this, the development of securely segregated test systems was undertaken that existed in parallel to ‘business as usual’ operations ready for data take on and promotion to production operations during a series of planned cut-over weekend outages. Overall this transitions involved design review & approval, procurement, implementation, disaster recovery and service take-on and cut-over phases. This project delivers 24x7 International Transaction Log (ITL) system hosting and skilled service desk to meet the requirements defined as part of the United Nations Kyoto Protocol. Simon delivered major project based change to meet the politically sensitive milestones set by the UNFCCC to support the protocol agreement. This included the introduction of 26 European Union National Registries into the ITL production environment. Due to the cultural, geographical diversity and political sensitivity this proved to be a major undertaking. This included a ‘Readiness’ evaluation of all Registries, 3 different go-live rehearsals and the actual go-live. Simon had to work closely with his counterparts in the UN within the constraints of the contract, direct project managers within Logica and ensure that the Client Service Manager was able to continue to deliver a reliable service to all hosted ITL environment. Subsequently, Simon was responsible for delivering all new changes and projects into the overall service, including software release upgrades, infrastructure upgrades and security enhancements. Simon also led the development of the Disaster Recovery Plan for the service and successfully tested its implementation in two complex rehearsals that included both National Registry and UNFCCC business unit participation. Simon helped the client to understand and improve their own change process whilst working with the Logica change manager and SAP support teams to fit their own processes and team structures around the new client process. This helped achieve a common understanding of the scope of each change and timescales of delivery for both NATS and Logica SAP practise. This in turn enabled the delivery of more effective changes where previously there had been a history of client expectations not being met. During this process development, completed procedures were introduced into ‘business as usual’ as they were agreed. The benefits of improved impact assessment (providing greater visibility to all parties) ensured that change, scope (and therefore expectations) were better defined. This immediately led to both improved management of the backlog of change. Show less
