About Simon Harley
Nuclear Waste Management: Advice and Science-informed Policy:(1) Advisor to UK Government and devolved administrations since 2007, through membership of CoRWM and membership of advisory group to SEPA, Scottish Government, and Chair of Royal Society of Edinburgh panels of Scottish Radioactive Waste policy.(2) Geological Disposal of Nuclear Waste – passive monitoring of Geological Disposal Facilities (GDF). Long-term monitoring of the performance of engineered barrier systems and the near-field geosphere utilising novel mineralogical approaches.Earth Science Research Areas:(1) The origin and evolution of high-temperature metamorphic belts, and their implications for lower crustal stability and continental evolution. Determination of pressure-temperature-time (P-T-t) paths in granulite terranes. Applied to granulite belts of Antarctica as well as high-grade metamorphic complexes in Central Australia, Finland, Southern Africa, Scotland, Greenland and India.(2) Experimental determination of mineral and mineral-melt reactions at high temperatures and pressures: mineral stabilities in pelitic rocks in the deep crust and experiments on the partitioning of H2O and CO2 between cordierite and granitic melts. (3) Theoretical analysis and application of P-T-composition relations of granulite mineral assemblages: Includes the interpretation of disequilibrium textures in terms of arrested reactions and P-T vectors. (4) Evaluation of the roles of fluids and melts in high-grade metamorphism: Geochemistry, C-O isotopic measurements and phase diagram calculations; this includes use of the volatile and light element composition of cordierite as a tracer of metamorphic fluid-melt processes using innovative ion-probe (SIMS) methods.(5) Accessory mineral behaviour in HT/UHT metamorphism and its implications for geochronology. (6) Geological evolution of East Antarctica and its Gondwanan context.

Simon Harley work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Principal Investigator, Nerc Eimf
The EIMF is a world-leading ion microprobe laboratory that provides microanalysis capability to UK and international scientists and to industry. With two Cameca ion microprobes, it is able to carry out and develop new microanalysis techniques across a range of Earth and Environmental geoscience areas and on many types of materials. See the ion probe.
Professor Of Lower Crustal Processes
- As Professor of Lower Crustal Processes I am involved in leading research in the following areas of geology:
- Metamorphism at high temperatures, particularly UHT metamorphism;
- Experimental studies of mineral and mineral-melt equilibria, including accessory minerals;
- Zircon and monazite behaviour in metamorphism;
- Metamorphism, structure, geochronology and geochemistry of basement terrains and the evolution of continental crust, with particular emphasis on the geological development of Antarctica and GondwanaI also am involved.
Lecturer And Reader
As reader and Lecturer I carried out research in similar fields to that noted above, apart from the work in nuclear that has developed only in the past few years. I also taught and organised many undergraduate courses - too many to note here!
Member - Advisor To Uk Government
UK Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM)Meember of CoRWM, provider of advice to UK government and devolved administrations on the safe disposal and interim storage of radioactive waste. Scrutiny of implementation of the 'Managing Radioactive Waste Safely' and 'Implementing Geological Disposal' UK policies. Particular interest in deep geological.
