Us Doe Summer Undergraduate Laboratory Internship At Nrel

Current

Golden, Colorado, United States

During my SULI internship at NREL, I studied MoS2 as a scalable and cost-effective HER electrocatalyst within NREL’s solar photochemistry group. Through this project I expanded my talents in nano-scale catalyst synthesis by optimizing a Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) process to generate pristine MoS2 monolayer crystals. I then used Mott-Schottky capacitance and other electrochemical measurement techniques to inspect the electronic structure of MoS2 and its defect states. I also employed various microscopy and spectroscopy techniques (Raman, PL, UV-Vis, Ellipsometry, to characterize the quality and structure of electrocatalyst samples. I excelled on my project deliverables, including general audience abstract (selected for exemplar’s collection), research poster (presented at SULI poster Fair and Gerischer Electrochemistry Symposium), and a summative research report.

Vice President Of Recruitment

Evanston, Illinois, United States

As a founding executive member of Northwestern's KTP chapter, Northwestern’s first pre-professional, co-ed technical fraternity, I was responsible for organizing and managing the member recruitment process. I lead a team of 5 to organize and run recruitment week, managing the time of ~50 members and ~120 candidates, with a focus on fairness and equity for all involved. I collaborated with other executive board members to organize speaker events, information sessions, social gatherings, and pledge class bonding events to ensure the strong and continued growth of KTP and its members. I created and gave two presentations to each pledge class, one focused on sustainability in the tech space, and one focused on research. Additionally I have served as a social and professional mentor for three students through KTP's member network.

Daad Rise - Summer 2023 Ammonia Decomposition Research Intern

Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

My DAAD RISE research internship awarded me the opportunity to work as a research intern in the NH3 decomposition sub-group of Prof. Malte Behrens’ lab at the Christian Albrechts University of Kiel. There are three main goals of my project. To achieve all three goals I closely collaborated with Prof. Behrens, Postdocs, and numerous PhD students. The first sub-project involves the use and optimization of a hydrothermal method for synthesizing TiO2 in controllable phase ratios. The second sub-project involves systematically using the deposition precipitation method to deposit transition metals onto TiO2 in evenly-dispersed, high surface area sites. The third sub-project involves using catalytic testing to determine what factors lead to high activity and extended catalytic lifetime.Throughout the project, catalysts materials were analyzed using X-ray powder diffraction, hydrogen temperature programmed reduction, transmission electron microscopy, infrared analysis, and BET N2 physisorption, among other methods. I was responsible for analyzing and compiling research results into weekly updates for other students, researchers, and Prof. Behrens.During this project, I also attended the annual DAAD RISE conference, where I had the opportunity to collaborate with other RISE interns, and learn from incredible individuals, both in my field and across the scientific landscape. I also engaged in numerous chances for cultural exchange. I took full advantage of the powerful learning opportunities that result from engaging with communities abroad.
