Initially employed as an electrical inspector carrying out new overhead and underground network connections to new installations, electrical inspection services, solar power generation systems, disconnections & reconnections plus general metering work. Reappointed to mass-deployment projects training and auditing metering technicians to install smart-meters throughout New Zealand. My current role involves travelling to most of the electricity networks in NZ to train and audit metering technicians and inspectors. Training includes the design and delivery of training packages for electricians and electrical inspectors using power-point, video and practical demonstrations plus one-on-one in-field training in real job situations. We are currently installing EDMI, Landis & Gyrr and Elster smart-meters (both GPRS and MESH types) for AMS, SmartCo, Metrix, Counties and individual network owners, in most electricity networks in New Zealand.

Self-employed electrical contractor specialising in domestic and commercial electrical projects. New homes, shops, motels, renovations, repairs and installations. Rural power supply solutions for remote locations as well as regular commercial and domestic electrical wiring.Staff of between 6 -10 electricians, apprentices and office staff we grew from a one-man-band to a sizeable company in the Nelson-Tasman region and wired over 1000 homes in the time we were in business there. My role included pricing, quotations and estimates, tenders, maintaining key relationships with volume builders, winning jobs and keeping the customers happy. I sold the business late in 2013 to one of my competitors and still maintain contacts with them and my former staff. Also opened a lighting retail store during this time and ran it along with my brother for about six years before selling it out to him.

Contracted to ETITO concurrently with other occupations as the National Moderator as well as Regional Advisor (Tasman), On-job assessment representative (Nelson), Technical Writer and Industry Training Representative.As National Moderator I was responsible for auditing all training providers and on-job assessors throughout NZ for the ETITO and covered about 25% of them each year for four years. Prior to this role I also wrote many of the unit standards and re-wrote them again several years later right at the beginning of the unit standard qualification design. I was also part of the team that wrote the assessment guides and helped design the electrical trades qualifications as well as other technical writing tasks. This role was concurrent with other employment.

Establishing and maintaining key relationships with industry, regulatory bodies, professional organisations and Industry Training Organisations (ITOs). Also completed training and registration as an electrical inspector during this time.
