I was called to the English Bar in 1987 and to the Guernsey Bar in 1988, and have been a lawyer in private practice ever since although, after many years as a partner of my firm, I am now a consultant working on a part time basis. My principal area of specialisation is the law of trusts. In Chambers High Net Worth Guide 2021 I was ranked as a "Senior Statesperson", and the commentary was:"Simon Howitt of Babbé LLP provides in-depth expertise on trust and fiduciary issues. "Simon knows his stuff," a fellow lawyer says; "he is probably the most seasoned trusts practitioner in Guernsey." Another interviewee says that "Simon Howitt is excellent," explaining that "he is very capable and has a good eye for detail. He is very knowledgeable; he probably has more trust law knowledge than most have ever learnt." I have been a Commissioner of the Guernsey Financial Services Commission, which is Guernsey's financial services regulator, since 2013, and am a member of the Editorial Board of the Jersey and Guernsey Law Review and a member of the Board of Examiners for the Guernsey Bar Examinations.
